Background & History

Contents

The Akira is one of the fleet's most heavily armed starships. The Akira was designed during the Cardassian war featuring a weapons pod located at the aft section of the ship that is armed with torpedoes launchers and phasers. Akira-class ships have since become one of the fleet's most active battleships, used during both Borg and Dominion conflicts.

The Akira-class was a class of Federation starship that was in service with Starfleet by the early 2370s. Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards was one of the primary construction sites used for this class in 2371. (VOY: "Relativity")

Akira-class starships were featured prominently in the Battle of Sector 001 (Star Trek: First Contact) and the Dominion War(DS9:"Call to Arms", et al.). Several Akira-class ships were stationed near Deep Space 9 during the war. (DS9: "The Magnificent Ferengi", "Afterimage")

In 2374, the Akira saw action during Operation Return and the First Battle of Chin'toka, where at least one ship of the class was destroyed by an orbital weapon platform. (DS9: "Favor the Bold", "Sacrifice of Angels", "Tears of the Prophets") In 2375, they were involved in the Second Battle of Chin'toka and the Battle of Cardassia. (DS9: "The Changing Face of Evil", "What You Leave Behind")

Configuration/Construction

The Akira Class vessels appear to have the standard Saucer/Nacelle configuration, but unlike other similar ships of the 24th Century, the Saucer Section is incapable of separation from the Engineering Section. Like the Nebula Class Starship, the Warp Nacelles are positioned below the Saucer Section. The Nacelle Pylons join with Catamaran-like "beam" sections, which project forward to link into the Saucer Section 1/3 in from the Port & Starboard rims, but also continue upward to form a Weapons Pod/Tactical Information Center Platform similar to that of the older Miranda Class, the Nebula Class and newer Luna Class Starships.

Tactical Information Center

The Tactical Information Center (TIC) is located on decks A and B of the aft sail area. A large room, the TIC is twice as large as the Ship's bridge, and is fully manned through all duty shifts. The TIC is typically commanded by the Second Officer. During combat, the TIC allows the Bridge Officers to focus on Primary Operations, while the TIC focuses on Flight Ops.

The TIC is the nerve center for Flight Operations, conducting combat operations utilizing the Akira's Spacefighter & Runabout Wings and filters the numerous sensor plots and intelligence gathered by the starfighters and Runabouts. The TIC directly supervises all primary and secondary Flight Operations and coordinates all Flight, Search and Rescue, and Fighter-based activities.

Flight Bay Configuration

The Saucer Section contains two large shuttle bays on Deck 12. One is located at the forward edge of the saucer section, with the other at the rear. These are linked together through the center of the ship, comprising a "Through & Through Flight Bay", allowing for simultaneous Launch and Landing operations. During peacetime this would allow an Akira to evacuate large numbers of small survey craft, or ferry a high number of evacuees on board. During the Dominion war the Akira often served as Fighter Carriers. In Carrier mode, they can handle up to Forty Attack Fighters, although a load of Thirty Fighters and Ten Utility craft... or 20 Fighters, 5 Runabouts and a handful of Utility Craft might be more feasible.
