    • Write Up:

The following is a recap of the community service activities done by FCOL Anne Zecca, CO of the MFS Amon-Ra, in 2010:

She donated platelets at LifeSouth Community Blood Centers (Gainesville, FL) on 1/17/10, 2/12/10, 4/7/10.

She participated in the March of Dimes March for Babies on 3/27/10 in Gainesville (FL), raising $100 for the cause.

She assisted at the first ever Gainesville (FL) Fisher House Celebrity Golf Classic, held 5/24/10 at the Gainesville Golf & Country Club.  The event raised funds to help build a Fisher House for families of military veterans getting care at the Gainesville VA Medical Center.  She helped in keeping an eye on the breakfast trays, lunch buffet & beverage table (beer, wine, soda); making sure they were well supplied.

She assisted with the American Heart Association Heart Walk held on 9/18/10, at the North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville, FL.  She supervised a group of college students who were distributing healthy snacks such as fruit, bottled water & granola bars to participants.

She helped with the American Cancer Society's Making Strides against Breast Cancer held on 10/23/10, in downtown Gainesville, FL.  She assisted with an area where breast cancer survivors received t-shirts, goodie bags and snacks.

She assisted with the Veterans Day program held on 11/11/10, at the Alachua County Veterans' Memorial in Gainesville, FL.  She helped a local veterans' group hand out rulers, pencils and children's coloring books.

She also assisted with the All American Liberty Fest held on 11/14/10, at Santa Fe College, Gainesville, FL.  She worked with a local veterans' group by handing out children's coloring books.

FCOL Zecca also supported veterans' causes in 2010 by attending meetings of the following organizations:

Ladies Auxiliary VFW (LAVFW) American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Marine Corps League (MCL) Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart (LAMOPH)

To that end, she holds the following offices: Unit President - LAVFW, LAMOPH Unit Historian - ALA Detachment Librarian (appointed staff) - MCL District Chaplain - LAVFW District Public Relations Chair - ALA Department Jr. Vice President - LAMOPH (FL)

She also served as Department President of the LAMOPH during 2010.

Her involvement in veterans' affairs stems from her late father, a US Army veteran of WWII, who was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart.

If you feel that the above members and/or their cell are worthy of consideration for any other MFI Awards, please do.

    • MFICM Recipient(s):

The following Members have distinguished themselves across MFI.

  • MFI Commendation:
    • Recipient(s):
      • Brig. General Marc Easterly: He is a loyal and dedicated rebel who emulates the spirit of MFI. He tirelessly works on projects like the Marine Patch Project and is forever giving of his time and advice however he can.
      • Admiral Steven Lackey: Even with great personal issues that have taken precedent, Steve has has managed to keep informed and provide us all with candid counsel in the past year. His efforts have not gone unnoticed by any means. Over the years he's spent countless hours on the duties attached to his position. Not the least of which is encouraging the membership in Fandom, he has played a role in every major Sim event in MFI for the past few years. Furthermore he's also worked hard on 'paperwork' projects like the handbook, continued work with the zones, and many others. Never has he failed to represent the membership viewpoint during discussions nor has RL stopped him from continuing his dedication to his club. His willingness to serve has always been present. He willingly stepped forward when asked to serve as DCOS then later eventually when FADM Johnson needed a COO, Steve once again stepped forward. A person of considered integrity I am honored to serve with him and pleased to present him with a MFICM for his years of well done service as Chief of Operations.
  • Naval Commendation Medal:
    • Nominees:
      • MCPO Donna Gillis: For over four years Donna has been the support arm for the day to day operations of the Impetuous. She’s always been there for the rest of us during the long hours of our game weekends and volunteer events with refreshments and meals and words of encouragement.

Donna has served as a “Beta tester” for several of the exams in the MFMC and Engineering colleges and given a lot of creative criticism from a “non Trekkie” point of view.

      • Sgt. Major Bill Absher: Bill has been a great help with all three of the Labor Day Offensive campaigns as well as our chapter gaming projects like our 2007 and 2010 Pearl Harbor Day gaming weekends. He’s helped a great deal with concept work and fleshing out the details of the games. Bill has also volunteered a great deal with the Girl Scouts of America in addition to our usual year end community work with Walker and Jefferson Counties.

In the past 3 years Bill has also given a great deal of time and energy in re-opening of the Engineering college of the MFI academy. Ball has also been very active in the MFMC Mekk program. Mekk is an avenue for Battletech and Mechwarrior enthusiasts to express their fandom in a Trek setting

      • M/GSgt Mikel Beggs: Mike has been a great help with all three of the Labor Day Offensive campaigns as well as our chapter gaming projects like our 2007 and 2010 Pearl Harbor Day gaming weekends. Date: 11.20.2010

Subject: M.F.S. Impetuous Rank: N/A Service Number: MFI-RC-112057 Unit of Assignment: N/A

Award Recommended: Zone 6 Unit of the Year Award

Reasons:

Each year we try to find more ways to be more active and attempt to raise the standard.

By the end of this year the crew of the Impetuous will have put in a collective 900 hours of volunteer and community service, including volunteering at homeless shelters in the Houston and Beaumont areas.

Respectfully submitted,

Marc Easterly Brigadier General (Commanding) M.F.S. Impetuous

saw our Red Shirts vs. Death and Firebirds vs. Thunderbirds competitions well organized and attended.

I did not realize that I neglected to send in my November report, due to our rapid-fire e-mails and increased numbers of activities and planning sessions causing it to slip entirely from my mind. (Thus the reason for a little larger of a report at this time.)

1. The Aurora crew has managed to make baking fun again, by having a Bake-off between our naval and marine members. The idea was simple, everyone chooses a dessert from a cookbook or a family-favorite that they can make. One single-serving of the dessert is cooked/set-aside for the judge(s), while the rest of the desserts are taken to the local police or fire precinct office, or youth or elderly community center, for them to enjoy. (We were also very careful of allergies and pointedly made small labels to tell what ingredients were within the containers, just in case.) The judges then got to enjoy awarding a point value (scale of 1 to 5) to each dessert offered. The team with the most points had the overflow funds of the Aurora chapter presented to their charity of choice. $72 was donated to the Ronald McDonald Houses Charities on Dec. 5th, 2010.

2. We began playing games on the Neopets website, divided into teams of two, each team collecting points from their games played to be added to a grand total for that team, they had the option of playing up to 3 times on a selection of 5 various games that could be added to the team total, a screen-shot of proof of their scores were offered to the team captains and judges to avoid any cheating (not that we believe any of our crew would do so, but in the heat of the moment accusations can often be made). At the end of a two week period of time, The scores were tallied and it was found that Red Shirts once more (as was the norm in TOS) succumbed to Death's embrace. This meant that Amnesty International would be receiving the higher amount of funds from our sponsors for these games, while the March of Dimes Foundation won the lesser amount. We of the Aurora crew were the ones who found ourselves rather surprised, however, as our sponsors for the Neopets RSvD challenge doubled the amount given in total, thus $700 was donated to Amnesty International, while $300 went to the March of Dimes! It was a wonderful gift that had our crew feeling light-hearted the week before the Christmas holiday.

We still have our FaceBook Games and Pogo.com games challenges to go, but there is a bit of sad/bad news in that our major contributing sponsor for the competitions the Aurora crew has enjoyed amongst it's members lost his battle to cancer just a few days after the Yuletide holiday. (The running lights are dimmed currently, as we morn the loss of this wonderful soul who shared in life's greatest rewards with us.)

Other endeavors we have been involved in include:

  1. The Operations and Staffing of Norwescon 34 Science Fiction/Fantasy

Writers Convention (which will have Guest of Honor Jim Butcher, author of the Harry Dresden novels).

  1. Coffee and Craft days scheduled, with activities hosted by the

Aurora Firebirds OIC Juanita Burlew, each Wednesday afternoon through the month of December.

  1. Costuming and Sewing Lessons, hosted by myself and the XO in our

home, for the Aurora crew on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of Nov and Dec.

  1. Meeting with and scheduling Star Trek trivia nights through the year

of 2011 with the staff of AFK Tavern (a new pub for those thoroughly engrossed in the gaming and fandom communities), and gathering/coordinating donations of game materials to the Tavern on behalf of the Aurora.

  1. The Aurora Crew New Year's Eve celebration and recruiting event,

where two more new members were happy to join in our adventures with MFI! (Now, I just need to remember how to add them to the crew roster on the website.)

I hope this report meets with your approval, apologize for the lack of report offered in the month of November, and will strive to do better in accurate and timely reporting through 2011.

Wishing you each health and prosperity through the new year, In service, -- Brian Pickett
