[edit] Ship Design Inspiration

...actually I have spent quite a bit of time contemplating what ship type best fits into my needs and background. Available resources for the "Borg Scout" [ie: Hugh Borg era] are quite vague, limited, and contradictory. Decent graphics are difficult if not impossible to find. The few images don't really seem to fit the Borg theme of basic geometric shapes. Even the data doesn't quite jive in that the metric tonage of the listed Borg Scout ship appears far excessive for a ship of the limited crew size and small "footprint" displayed in actual film/broadcast series historical footage.

[edit] Net Resources

A web search for information about the Dune Heighliner provide very little material about the size of the Dune ship. Two of the best sources I could find [1][2] establish the size at a length of about 20 kilometers. A comparison was made to the Babylon Five (B5) station saying two of those could fit end-to-end inside the Heighliner.
One of the web resources stated: "I’d consider the cylindrical design more canon: Kevin J. Anderson went and used it in his otherwise-terrible prequel novels. Mr. Anderson also went and did me the good favour of providing the length of a Heighliner: Twenty kilometres."

[edit] Size Selection

This is way too large for my idea of a new Borg cylinder ship design. I envisioned something smaller than most of the Sphere and Cube designs, yet big enough to function as a type of carrier to Trek ships. Something Borg-ish yet within reason. I chose a 1 kilometer length, a scale approx 1/20th the size of the Dune ship. Oddly enough it is NOT the largest ship in the Maquis fleet.

[edit] Limitations in Search of Balance

In order to avoid a "super-ship" design, there must be weaknesses and limitations to balance role play situations.

[edit] Crew Size

In the role of emancipated Borg, there are few opportunities to upgrade the Borg soldier/technician or produce replacement Borg units. Other non-Borg species are necessary to keep a ship of this size repaired and operating. Creature comforts which are not required by normal Borg must be available. Efficiency is not as high as on a Borg vessel.

[edit] Communication

Since the Compliance has no Vinculum, there is not the ever present single-mindedness that normal Borg have access to. Single minded purpose is now the responsibility of each Borg unit to maintain.

[edit] Technology

Much of the best Borg technology is based on instant access via the Vinculum to their accumulated, assimilated technology acquisitions of the many years and conquests. Some technology can be used in designs for Compliances systems, but it may not represent the most advanced and refined engineering that normal Borg represent.

Cutting beams, tractor beams, warp drive systems, self-repair of critical systems, medicine, weapons, shields and other technology may represent some improvement over pure non-Borg designs, but not to the extent normal Borg are capable of.

[edit] Propulsion

The Borg transwarp conduit network is mostly destroyed into the Maquis, Federation, and Cardassian quadrants of space. Even if a few lone remnants are found to be functional our ability to capitalize are limited due to equipment failures. Compliance is not the fastest or most agile ship in the Maquis. She does have a few tricks and an imaginative crew to compensate. That coupled with her task force, much of which can be based internally in the two vast hangar spaces, can more than compensate. Compliance functions more like a mobile station than a ship. In conflicts Compliance is normally positioned between the adversary and the Maquis core facilities as a last guard.

[edit] Active ship Areas and Systems

Large sectors of ship spaces are either unfinished or have been cannibalized to maintain systems in other higher priority areas.

[edit] Hangar, Docking, and Repair

Two massive semi-enclosed spaces allow vessel transport, internal docking, and space dock facilities.

External hard points allow docking and transport of many vessels too large to fit inside the hangar spaces. Warp integrity fields can be extended to include vessels so docked.
