The IMS William Penn serves the Susquehanna Valley with members currently from the Harrisburg area, Hershey, Elizabethtown, Lancaster, Manheim, and New Holland. Membership is, however, open to all interested Sci-Fi fans wherever they may be. Although Star Trek will be the primary area of interest of the group, other science fiction TV shows and movies will be discussed and watched at gatherings. Books may even be discussed if there is enough interest. Excursions to nearby conventions has been in the past and will be in the future a favorite activity of members of the chapter. The chapter may be found on Facebookor on Yahoo Groups.

To explain the registration number that the IMS William Penn uses, I will provide the same information that I used to formulate it. I located an interview with Matt Jefferieswhich explained where the NCC designation came from. Since the NCC was meant to imply a cooperative effort by the United States and Russia in space, it was appropriate to use it in a Sci-Fi TV show based in the future. I didn't think that it would be as useful to a Sci-Fi club based in the United States during the present. Thinking of the future of MFI, it occurred to me that it might be useful for chapters to have a registration number which indicated what country they were based in and the postal code for the region of the country where they were based. I located ISO 3166-1 alpha-3, the International Standards Organization's list of 3-letter designators for every country in the world. The code for the United States is USA so I combined it with my mailing address zip code of 17601 to form the registry number for the IMS William Penn. It is my hope that this system will be adopted by new chapters to declare their locations by country and postal code as well as older chapters which may have never adopted a registry number at all. The (hypothetical) MFS Diana Spencer in Great Britain could have the registry number GBR-SW1A-1AA (postal code taken from Postcodes in the United Kingdom).
