MFS Determined arrived at MSS Storm Bay. FCol Greg Preast greeted his friend, station manager John Lurry. Greg had been aboard this station many times over the years, from a young child visiting with his family to now as the top Marine in the MFMC.
 +
 +
“It has been a long time, sir.”
 +
 +
“Too long, my friend,” replied Lurry. “Please, call me John.”
 +
 +
“Can’t do that, sir. You are much my senior age-wise, and this is a Maquis business visit.”
 +
 +
“Indeed. But probably not just the business you were thinking.”
 +
 +
Greg’s eyebrow raised.
 +
 +
“What do you mean, Mr. Lurry?  No more trouble with Tribbles, I hope?”
 +
 +
Mr. Lurry grinned, and then roared in laughter as he patted his friend’s shoulder. “Certainly not, my friend. Nothing like that.” After a sigh of relief, Greg joined in the laughter, albeit a bit nervously.”Well then, what is on your mind?”
 +
 +
“Speaking freely, I have been here a long time. We are a staging area, and a detention facility. I want to go…somewhere, ANYWHERE, and retire. I just want to enjoy life somewhere besides here. But to do that, I need two things: to release the last 20 prisoners, and to find someone to replace me.”
 +
 +
“Three things: you need transportation.”
 +
 +
“Okay, three then. There is not a lot of traffic by here anymore, except the occasional cargo storage and pickup request. Most of the prisoners are so aged they are no longer a threat. They have been medically review and sent to their homes of record to live out their last bit of remaining time. The few that are, well, I know you could use some warriors.”
 +
 +
“How many able-bodied and willing to fight?”
 +
 +
“12, Greg.”
 +
 +
The Commandant smiled generously. “A ‘Dirty Dozen,’ huh?” Mr. Lurry facepalms
 +
 +
“I know you would go there, with your affinity for old war movies.”
 +
 +
“You know me well, my dear friend. Have the prospects meet me in staging area 3 for review. I take it they have accepted my offer? They fight for me and the Maquis; if they win, they receive pardons?”
 +
 +
“At this stage in their lives? Yes. At this stage in MY life, if they had not, I would have had a phaser pointed at the bottom of their backbones. As Detective Riggs said in your “Lethal Weapon” movies:
 +
 +
‘I’m gettin’ too old for this sh…”
 +
 +
“Yes, I know how it ends, Mr. Lurry,” said Greg with a wry smile.
 +
 +
“I am looking for a retirement plan myself, Mr. Lurry. I think we can make medicine. Let’s discuss it over drinks. After the review, and my friends arrive for our strategy session, you and I can lay it all out on the table.”
 +
 +
“That sounds wonderful. Your prospects are already en route to the staging area. I’ll be getting the drinks ready.”
 +
 +
*Fast forward, review complete, prospects accepted and beamed to holding quarters on Determined. FCol Preast and Mr. Lurry sipping Saurian brandy.*
 +
 +
“My plan is to retire from active duty in the near future, Mr. Lurry. I’ve been looking for some possibility of a remote duty station. This would just about do it.” I have had enough of bureaucracy and politics getting too deep into warfighting. I just want a nice, somewhat quiet place to run. Limited staff, some interaction with the outside world, but not too much. Once this mission is over, and possibly after I rack up one more promotion, how about I contact you, and we solidify this?”
 +
 +
“Sounds like a plan, youngster,” replied Mr. Lurry, “but don’t take too long, now. I’ve got some great-great-great grandchildren I want to go see.”
 +
 +
“No problem, sir.” Oh, I do have *minor* favor to ask…”
 +
 +
“I kind of figured, “ Mr. Lurry smiled. “Whatcha got?”
 +
 +
“Well, we have had some issues with the Dominion. Empok Nor has been destroyed,” explained Greg, sliding his finger down the side of his nose a la an ancient film called “The Sting.”
 +
 +
Mr. Lurry feigned a gasp as he returned the gesture and a wink “Oh NO! Any survivors?”
 +
 +
“It does not appear so at this time.”
 +
 +
Tapping his fingers in Morse code, Greg advised Mr. Lurry, “Give me about 30 minutes to get gone. At that point, Shift Storm Bay off its orbit by sub-lateral of 3.082 to Z/4.126 along a ventral rentrillic trajectory. Blow as much debris out into space as you can to make it look as if the station has been destroyed. Utilize any damage decoy holograms you have to sell the ruse.”
 +
 +
“Will do,” came the reply.
 +
 +
The two men shook hands. Before they broke the handshake, they pulled into a father son-like hug.
 +
 +
“Take care of yourself…John,” Greg said, as he rendered a Vulcan salute. “Live Long, and Prosper.”
 +
 +
“I have done both, youngster. It is now your turn. Travel well, and good luck, son,” Mr. Lurry managed to reply while returning the Vulcan salute.
 +
 +
Greg noticed a slight quiver in Mr. Lurry’s smile, and perhaps a bit of mist in his eyes. Wheeling on his heels at his famous speed to avoid belying his own sadness at leaving such a good friend, the
 +
Dant barked, “Determined, Skipper! One to beam up.”
 +
 +
Arriving on the Determined, Greg was dabbing at his eyes. The Chief Engineer asked, “Commandant, something wrong?” “Eyes must be drying out from acclimatizing…damn atom-scattering transporter. I got to remember to get myself a shuttle.” After a deep breath, the Determined’s skipper settled into the center chair. “Helm, set course for Lethras. We have a rendezvous to keep.” “Lethras, aye, sir. Course laid in.”
 +
 +
“Engage.”
 +
 +
“And so it begins…or maybe…ends?” pondered Greg as he slid his favorite coffee cup full of “dark homemade sin,” as he fondly referred to his coffee.

<font color=yellow>He watched the viewscreen, his fingers steepled together in front of his chin while his antennae twitched with anticipation. ~This is it... ~ he thought, ~...the moment we find out if our preparation was in vain or will succeed.~
 +
 +
It had been many months that they knew their pass codes had been stolen, a few short weeks to ensure they were all changed and locked, in sync between the ships of the Maquis Forces and bases. It took several long, grueling weeks after that to put their full plan into motion, fretting each day that they wouldn't have enough time to do what must be done before the invading Dominion forces arrived to wipe them out. But it had been just over a year since the Breen invasion wave had been decimated, it made them confident that it could be done again if needed.
 +
 +
Operation - New Batter had ensured that they were ready for another attack, and they were able to take the offensive to the enemy and bring back the Maquis citizens that had been taken as slave labor. The Force Captain of the SSD had set those plans in motion, and the council took a gamble that it could be pulled off. It was such an overwhelming success that here was that same Andorian, no longer the head of the Special Security Directorate, but Force Admiral of the Maquis Forces itself. So why was it that he felt something wasn't right? His antennae gave another slight twitch.
 +
 +
Bre waited, patient, considering the variables as carefully as his science and engineering teams had done to get the bases and ships ready. Mentally, he ticked off command people within each element of the Forces: Olan Varis, now in charge of the SSD, would be fine with the tasks he was charged with. ~I should know, I trained him myself.~  Force Colonel Preast, heading up "the charge of the light brigade" (the quip was still fresh in mind for FADM T'Riellis, and it brought a slight smile for the briefest of moments) with the MFMC, his new Chief of Operations aboard the McNelly, the tried and true Task Force of Klingon Warriors - he had no doubts of them. But the MRL had suffered major losses in the last few years, and it was felt strongly in the last attack of invasive species. ~If that can really be called an attack, more like a fiasco that had everyone wondering if the Q were merely playing a joke at our expense.~ he mused silently on the matter of the Florks.
 +
 +
"Encrypted message from Admiral 10of9, sir." the soft lilt of the Betazoid comm officer hinted at her concern for the mood of the crew with her next announcement, "The Compliance has sighted a fleet of Dominion ships entering the Badlands, 30 warships and at just over 3 times as many of their smaller attack craft en route." The Lieutenant's eyes wide with the news, a faint hint of panic made them seem all the darker until she locked eyes with Captain Pursha T'Riellis; whatever exchange happened between them, it offered the Betazoid to find hope from the Caitian captain, and that was enough to steel her in a way that would keep her monitoring her station with all the more determination than before.
 +
 +
"Pur, make sure your transporter chief is ready to beam over the Old 64 crew on Lieutenant Lutae's command." Bre spoke to his spouse professionally, but that pet name between them offered a familial aire to all manned stations on the bridge of the Oslo class Aquila, offering a moment of trust to ease the tension. They all knew she would see to this duty as efficiently as she had always done as his XO aboard the original Aquila, which they had dubbed 'Old 64' after the first of her registry numbers - NCC 64979 - once the new heavy escort ship was christened as the Aquila in its place. "I don't want to lose anyone just because we miscalculated in our figures and simulations."
 +
 +
"Your people know they're jobs, Admiral." she reassured him, with a hand caressing his forearm for emphasis of the sentiment her words offered. With a mischievous smile, her voice resounded across the bridge for the rest of the crew, "You heard the Admiral, let's give the Dominion our best show. We don't want to let the old man down, after all." Her grin widened as the Andorian's antennae swirled at the verbal sting from her quip. Still, she did note that command was weighing heavily on Bre, and it gave her pause from pursuing any more ribbing.
 +
 +
The Aquila swept amidst the eddies of the plasma storms of the Badlands, remaining in transporter range of Empok Nor and Old 64. As the first of the Dominion forces broke off to chase the other vessels along the defensive line of the station, the Norway class 64979 remained as planned. Stepping from the turbolift, the Anitcan security officer passed a data padd to the Admiral, then watched the show on the viewscreen with a single comment of admiration, "It's nice to see the old girl give some good blows to our attackers."
 +
 +
With a quirked smile, the Andorian nodded, "That it is, Mr. Arkved." Glancing down at the padd for a moment, he added, "Good job with the evacuation. Only SEALS Team IX remains?"
 +
 +
"Aye sir." the Antican barked, stiffening to attention, "Awaiting confirmation from Lieutenant Lutae, as ordered."
 +
 +
"Excellent, to your stations, then."
 +
 +
All eyes remained on the screen, watching for the moment when the two Dominion warships opened fire on Empok Nor. For a moment, it seemed as if the shields would hold, before one array screen blew, then another, and another. Finally, a great burst erupted causing all on the Aquila's bridge to shield their eyes, blinking a few times to see that only dust and minute debris remained. With another sudden explosion, Old 64 met with the lead Dominion warship as it arced upward at the last second, taking out the enemy vessel as it blazed with intense light that differed from the plasma energies swirling and rippling around them. "Did we get them out?" Captain T'Riellis asked, barely able to contain herself in waiting for the answer.
 +
 +
"All but Major Hawkes, Captain." the Betazoid's words fell flat in the moment of silence that followed. "We are getting the encrypted signal from Empok Nor, Admiral." she continued, a glimmer of hope in her words that they would offer some consolation radiating from her continued report, "No fatalities, only two injuries, and minimal structural damage to all areas save lower docking ring, section G, upon initial damage control scans."
 +
 +
With a nod, the Andorian rose from his seat, took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Excellent work, people! Encrypt and transmit codes to all upper staff and set course for Headquarters. I'll be in the situation room, monitoring relays of our other outposts and cells." His eyes sweep the bridge crew warmly, before turning to the turbolift, the warmth replaced with an icy stare. ~Operation Death Shroud is a success, so far. But how many more casualties will there be?~

Return to Fan Fiction

LDO-15.jpg

This year's Labor Day Offensive is held in honor of The League of MIA/POW/WW Families.

Please Note

Currently this page is in work. Our ultimate goal is to give participation credit due to those who helped the campaign happen and come to at least a temporary conclusion. We welcome those who wish to role-play in this forum with us, and only ask that when you present your character or cell portion of the events that unfold, you do not attempt to resolve the conflict through your own direct actions or speak for other cells or individuals also taking part in these events. Should you wish to participate by performing some charitable action or group activity instead, please submit a report of what you have done to our Chief of Operations via the official mailing list or in e-mail. Thank you for your interest and cooperation.

If you have information on Ships/Units that are participants, you may post to the attached discussion page and FADM Pickett will see that you are added to the official list.
You will need to include the following: Ship/Cell Name, Member Name, Member Rank, Member Number, and any notes on the type or amount of participation. This is the Honor System, but we will verify claims as needed. Please 'only list those who participate' in whatever way.

Game Notes

In the basic game, each chapter chooses one of the below operations to take part in, whether you are gaming or writing fan fiction. Chapters may team up as they agree, but it is not necessary. You are quite free to run things from an independent point of view in this setting. The "objectives" listed in the operations simply flesh out the setting and viewpoints of the various roles, and provide prompts if you need them.

All operations are fairly open to interpretation and offer a variety of interesting stories, depending on what you and/or your team might wish to pursue. You don't have to follow the prompts in your chosen operation - they are simply scenarios that fit the archetype. You are also free to write from a character that is not your normal persona in MFI - and, if you like, you may even choose more than one operation to take part in. Feel free to be creative. And if you choose to take part by working with our honored (or even another) charity, please let us know what you did, who participated with you, and what charity it was if not our honored one.

[edit] EXPLANATION

Whether you are taking part in the LDO individually or as a group, you may do so in a variety of ways. Just what are the different roles? It honestly depends on how much activity and participation you choose to invest in the exercise:

1. 'Maquis Intelligence' - You are working on behalf of the Maquis Intelligence Branch (either SOC or SSD) to garner information about the enemy forces that are attacking.

2. 'Maquis Marine' - You are part of the ground forces or a ship-boarding assault team working to take out enemy forces, halting their advancement or driving them away.

3. 'Maquis Navy' - You are assisting with ground placement, reconnaissance or evacuation procedures to protect and recover civilian lives.

[edit] TACTICAL BRIEFING

[edit] THE ENEMY

JemHadarSoldiers.jpg
A Jem Hadar attack group, starting their operations by boarding and taking control of a Gorn colony cruiser, managed to gain entry to Maquis space and have begun systematic annihilation of colonists within the Lethras star system, and it is suspected they will use that as a staging base to do the same with the rest of the Maquis.

Maquis Forces are cautioned against countering this threat via physical force. If unarmed confrontation is avoidable, do so: - shoot to kill always! Do not attempt to overcome these forces without VERY heavy weaponry. Even Klingon disruptors and Bat'leth have been noted to have little effect on their tough hide.

Informational Source: SOC Xenobiology Directorate "Finding new and interesting species to kill in new and interesting ways"

Enemy nation: The Dominion
Species name: Jem'Hadar
Expected level of resistance: Heavy
Fleet composition:
Attack Fleet: Unknown – 2 War ships, 4 Battle Cruisers and 24 Strike ships verified entering Maquis space.

JemHadarShip.jpg

Basic description: A genetically-engineered humanoid race from the Gamma Quadrant, the Jem'Hadar were the military arm of the Dominion and one of the most powerful military forces in the galaxy during their time.

Jem'Hadar are designed to have excellent vision and strength several times greater than Humans. They also have the ability to "shroud" themselves (a form of camouflage that acts as a personal cloaking field) effectively hiding them and their weapons from both sensors and the naked eye. However, they have to drop this effect when attacking.

Uniforms – Jem'Hadar uniforms allow their wearers to be almost completely unaffected by many forms of anti-personnel force field. Weaponry - Jem'Hadar carry plasma weapons in both rifle and pistol variants, capable of firing lethal disruptor bursts with anti-coagulants that are designed to slowly kill their enemies if the burst itself does not. The weapons have at least two other settings: they are able to stun, and to fire a more powerful burst capable of vaporizing a humanoid target. Melee Weapons - In close quarters, Jem'Hadar prefer the kar'takin, a type of two-handed pole-arm axe. They also carry combat knives.

It is highly probable that if they have any success or find little resistance they will stay and resume their previous attempt to subjugate our entire Quadrant. Force is the only thing which will stop them. That or having the Founders force them back to their own quadrant.

[edit] OPERATIONAL PROTOCOLS

[edit] Objective of Operation: Modus Sabateur

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure; life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

For those seeking to make a name for themselves or wishing to prove something (to themselves or others), this is a perfect way to do so. As a solo operative, or part of a team, your task is to find your way aboard enemy ships to find ways to sabotage them while gaining more information about the vessels and Dominion forces that our Intelligence can analyze and disseminate accordingly.

A. Write an after-action report about the ship systems, schematics, enemy fighting style or weaponry that were encountered.

B. Offer detailed scans or images showing the design of the enemy vessel's engineering, or reverse engineer enemy weaponry that you are able to abscond with.

C. Remain in communicator and transporter range, and present a verbal/visual record of the details aboard ship, noting weaknesses in their designs or shipboard operations once your mission is complete.

IncomingSubspace2.jpg

[edit] Objective of Operation: Midnight Run

At the end of the day, the goals are simple: safety and security.

As part of the ground forces operation for the Lethras system, you are charged with the extraction and evacuation of civilians, and the attempt to recover lost ground of the Jem'Hadar forces if at all possible. If not, then your mission is to make the enemy understand that taking more ground is too high a price to continue to pay – through means of ambush, ensnarement and sabotage.

A. Draw up a battle plan for your given area of the arid, rocky world of Lethras, include contingencies for meeting with a civilian element in your write-up.

B. Offer a report of the skirmish you and your team had with enemy forces, including details of numbers, weaponry used by both sides, and any injury or casualty reports.

C. Present the communications (and/or video) log of your team's efforts on Lethras for HQ to review, so that we might know what weaponry, snares, and methods of entrapment, fortifications or maneuvers worked against enemy forces.

[edit] Objective of Operation: Pied Piper

Children are gifts, they remind us of what is important.

One of the primary duties of the Maquis Naval Forces is that of protecting colonies and ships within our held territory of space. To this end, a convoy of civilian Gorn transports, on their way to the Lethras system, has taken heavy damage from the Jem'Hadar strike ships, and are now drifting somewhere off-course in the eddies and wakes of the Badlands. Many of these ships carry non-combative citizenry, their children and even a few hatchery ships. It is your duty to locate these ships and attempt to mount a rescue.

A. Present a record of account from the moment you began your search for the lost convoy to the point of rescue and return to base, include what methods were suggested, tried, failed and succeeded. Include what types of ships were encountered and colonists rescued, and if you were working alone or with other vessels or any specialized teams.

B. Share a diagram (or drawing) of your intended procedure that you will implement in the search and rescue operations.

C. Send a recording of your subspace transmissions with the ship your crew (attempts to/manages to) rescue. In this way HQ may study the operation, and utilize it to test future MFI officers in similar procedures.

[edit] Objective of Operation Death Shroud

I believe in endings that should suggest our stories always continue.

We knew it was only a matter of time before the Dominion sent shock troops to attempt to wipe us out. It is in our best interest to make them believe they have done so. Staging particular battles and colonies with information that will be leaked to their operatives, we will allow them to hit these places and offer pitched battles where it looks as if there were no survivors. In this way, we may find ourselves at peace, at least for a time, allowing us to rebuild our numbers and defenses while our enemies believe we have been obliterated.

A. Are you an operative, or team – or ship – that has leaked false information about the fall of the Maquis to the enemy? How so? Please give details in a story, or holo-novel, or even over a drink in 10 Forward.

B. Have you changed your identity, and are now infiltrating the Federation's (Or some other Empire's) shipping lanes? What cosmetic surgery or implants have you had, and who did the work? Put together a referral list, or hook us up with some new fake I.D. Cards, too! Tell us where you were infiltrating, if it was a mission to disseminate information, cause some faction to join the conflict or even muddle channels to confuse the enemy, while you're at it.

C. Are you someone who has helped with the relocation and redistribution effort? HQ will need the only surviving record of your log so that we can have that information (specially locked and secured as EYES ONLY material) for our top level security personnel.

[edit] Vessels & Units Assigned to Operation: Midnight Run

MFS Determined arrived at MSS Storm Bay. FCol Greg Preast greeted his friend, station manager John Lurry. Greg had been aboard this station many times over the years, from a young child visiting with his family to now as the top Marine in the MFMC.

“It has been a long time, sir.”

“Too long, my friend,” replied Lurry. “Please, call me John.”

“Can’t do that, sir. You are much my senior age-wise, and this is a Maquis business visit.”

“Indeed. But probably not just the business you were thinking.”

Greg’s eyebrow raised.

“What do you mean, Mr. Lurry? No more trouble with Tribbles, I hope?”

Mr. Lurry grinned, and then roared in laughter as he patted his friend’s shoulder. “Certainly not, my friend. Nothing like that.” After a sigh of relief, Greg joined in the laughter, albeit a bit nervously.”Well then, what is on your mind?”

“Three things: you need transportation.”

“How many able-bodied and willing to fight?”

“12, Greg.”

The Commandant smiled generously. “A ‘Dirty Dozen,’ huh?” Mr. Lurry facepalms

“I know you would go there, with your affinity for old war movies.”

“You know me well, my dear friend. Have the prospects meet me in staging area 3 for review. I take it they have accepted my offer? They fight for me and the Maquis; if they win, they receive pardons?”

“At this stage in their lives? Yes. At this stage in MY life, if they had not, I would have had a phaser pointed at the bottom of their backbones. As Detective Riggs said in your “Lethal Weapon” movies:

‘I’m gettin’ too old for this sh…”

“Yes, I know how it ends, Mr. Lurry,” said Greg with a wry smile.

“I am looking for a retirement plan myself, Mr. Lurry. I think we can make medicine. Let’s discuss it over drinks. After the review, and my friends arrive for our strategy session, you and I can lay it all out on the table.”

“That sounds wonderful. Your prospects are already en route to the staging area. I’ll be getting the drinks ready.”

  • Fast forward, review complete, prospects accepted and beamed to holding quarters on Determined. FCol Preast and Mr. Lurry sipping Saurian brandy.*

“Sounds like a plan, youngster,” replied Mr. Lurry, “but don’t take too long, now. I’ve got some great-great-great grandchildren I want to go see.”

“No problem, sir.” Oh, I do have *minor* favor to ask…”

“I kind of figured, “ Mr. Lurry smiled. “Whatcha got?”

“Well, we have had some issues with the Dominion. Empok Nor has been destroyed,” explained Greg, sliding his finger down the side of his nose a la an ancient film called “The Sting.”

Mr. Lurry feigned a gasp as he returned the gesture and a wink “Oh NO! Any survivors?”

“It does not appear so at this time.”

“Will do,” came the reply.

The two men shook hands. Before they broke the handshake, they pulled into a father son-like hug.

“Take care of yourself…John,” Greg said, as he rendered a Vulcan salute. “Live Long, and Prosper.”

“I have done both, youngster. It is now your turn. Travel well, and good luck, son,” Mr. Lurry managed to reply while returning the Vulcan salute.

Greg noticed a slight quiver in Mr. Lurry’s smile, and perhaps a bit of mist in his eyes. Wheeling on his heels at his famous speed to avoid belying his own sadness at leaving such a good friend, the Dant barked, “Determined, Skipper! One to beam up.”

“Engage.”

“And so it begins…or maybe…ends?” pondered Greg as he slid his favorite coffee cup full of “dark homemade sin,” as he fondly referred to his coffee.

  • MFS Aquila – Oslo Class Heavy Escort – Fleet Flagship

He watched the viewscreen, his fingers steepled together in front of his chin while his antennae twitched with anticipation. ~This is it... ~ he thought, ~...the moment we find out if our preparation was in vain or will succeed.~

With a quirked smile, the Andorian nodded, "That it is, Mr. Arkved." Glancing down at the padd for a moment, he added, "Good job with the evacuation. Only SEALS Team IX remains?"

"Aye sir." the Antican barked, stiffening to attention, "Awaiting confirmation from Lieutenant Lutae, as ordered."

"Excellent, to your stations, then."
