Rob says that the first Academy Commandant you have listed is Tom.. Actually.. there were two before..

ADM Rob Lerman - 1998 - 1999
ADM Steve Bearden - 1999 - 2000 (guesses)

Rob was a retired FADM for SFI. He had done alot for SFI in his day and he was looking for a new home and a new niche to settle in. Nothing ever came about and it he was Academy Commandant in name only.

Steve took over from Rob and hit the deck running. He designed everything that served as the foundation of the Academy including some of the basic courses, the ribbons we now use, and the medals we use. Steve can be touted as the "father" of the modern day Maquis Academy. He was awarded the OotM for that service.

and Hmm... I remember Rob Lerman being sporadically with us in the early years, but I don't remember him doing anything with the Academy idea. But then I was only the COO and he was probably conversing more with Tom (as VIC) and Gary (as IC). I do remember Steve Bearden building the Academy with Tom and one of them recruiting me for the Medical College, but I had completely forgotten that HE was the founding Commandant. Tom had always claimed that HE built the Academy, so I figured he was the Founding Commandant.

As much as Rob Lerman did for SFI, as well as being a Founding MFI member, if he really didn't "do anything or go anywhere" with the Academy (other than saying it'd be a good project), I'm just going to list Steve B as the Founding Commandant.

Some may disagree with this statement, saying that if it was Rob L's brainchild he should get the credit... but I'm using the same line of thought as if we ever actually get a working Cadet Program off the ground. Several (3? 4?) have tried to do it, but nobody's actually made a go of it. The person who actually does make it work should get the credit of "Founding head". (ie: dozens tried to make a light bulb, but Edison got the credit 'cause his worked) [Big Grin]

So... Even though it may have been Rob L's idea, you say nothing got done until Steve B took over the project. If that's true, I feel Steve B should get Founding Commandant status. Another way of looking at it is... If Steve B was Commandant when it Opened, he's the 1st (Founding) Commandant.

Also... I know Jon Cone's dates for being Commandant as being April 1999 - Oct 2000, so Steve B's tenure had to have been prior to 1999. I believe the Academy started in either '97 or '98.
