Maquis Diplomats Expelled from the Federation
In a surprising response to the Maquis demands for escorts on Starfleet vessels to enter Maquis territory, the Federation Council has unanimously voted to expel all Maquis diplomatic personal from Federation territory and sever all diplomatic ties with the Maquis. The Federation has stated that the Maquis government has done everything to hinder the spirit of cooperation and placed unrealistic demands on Starfleet who are trying to simply help the Cardassian people rebuild their lives after the destruction received by the Dominion. The Maquis have stated that the Federations increased patrols along its borders was nothing more than a show of force by Starfleet to intimidate the Maquis people to follow Federation demands. The Maquis will not be threatened by these strong arm tactics and expect better from the Federation.
This reporter managed to talk to the Maquis ambassador before he departed from DS9, the ambassador regrets that the Federation has taken this action that he feels will create more tension in an already tense situation for both civilizations. He also told this reporter that the Maquis will not expel Federation diplomats from Maquis space and remain open to the Federation and hope we can put this terrible incident behind us. This reporter could not reach the Federation ambassador for comment; however the embassy sent the following statement “The Federation continues to negotiate with the Maquis and to follow the basic principles that the Federation was founded on.” The Maquis escort containing a Galaxy and two Defiant class starships arrived at DS9 and under heavily armed escorts the Maquis diplomats boarded the ships and returned to Maquis territory, followed closely by Starfleet.
This action by the Federation has come with mixed response; many aid groups applauded this action stating this will show the Maquis that any action that further enhances the suffering of sentient life will not go unchallenged. Others believe this will only fuel further hostilities between the Federation and Maquis which could result in more suffering. The Maquis have now begun sending aid to the Cardassians in response to the protests and complaints by many; this however has caused some unrest when Bajoran citizens of the Maquis tried to block an aid shipment from getting to Cardassian space the Maquis fleet was able to clear the blockade peacefully and the aid was delivered to those who needed it. The Haven incident seems to have been a boiling point between the Federation and the Maquis and it is uncertain where things could go but tension between the two factions have only risen and some believe that hostilities between the Federation and the Maquis are unavoidable. However there is hope that this will pass and both the Federation and Maquis can return to more peaceful times.
