|The Galaxy Class began development in the 2350s at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards that orbit Mars. In 2370, Utopia Planitia's ground works could be seen by the Argus Array, and the Saucer Section, Secondary Hull and Warp Nacelles of a Galaxy Class could be seen to be under construction.|
When the Galaxy Class was launched, it's technical abilities, size and power were admired throughout the Federation and beyond. Many of it's systems were tested on previous Starships, but only brought into mainline service aboard the Galaxy Class Starship.
One of the most famous of the Galaxy Class line was the Federation's new flagship, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D), which was launched in 2363, a full 19 years after the destruction of the previous USS Enterprise in 2344.
Galaxy Class Starships were very attractive commands when they were first launched, due to their aforementioned size and impressive abilities, so many were commanded by some of the best Captains of the time. It was also attractive, because of it's capability for the crew to bring their families aboard to live with them while they served their duty.
In 2365 however, the Galaxy Class was put under the safety microscope, when the Enterprise's sister ship, USS Yamato (NCC-71807) was destroyed in an apparent accident near the Romulan Neutral Zone, the ship's systems suffering a complete failure, which caused the loss of anti-matter containment and the ship's destruction, sparking fears of a Class-wide design fault. After more investigations by the USS Enterprise though, it was discovered that an ancient computer program had tried to interface with the Yamato's computer systems and had been disasterously incapatible, leading to the loss of the Yamato.
A Galaxy Class, USS Odyssey (NCC-71832), was lost in first contact with the Dominion. While escaping after a mission to rescue some human hostages from the Jem'Hadar in the Gamma Quadrant, a Jem'Hadar Attack ship make a suicide run at the Odyssey's Stardrive section, catching the ship a massive hull breach, which lead to the destruction of the ship, the Danube Class Runabout's managed to escape.
Many Galaxy Class saw action during the following Dominion War, in Operation Return, The First Battle of Chin'Toka and The Battle of Cardassia.
More Galaxy Classes were known to be built towards the end of the 24th Century, despite newer designs such as the Sovereign Class coming into service, and the ship class itself could be found all around Federation space.
