The Wyvern (promounced Wiv-vern) receives its name from the winged 4-Legged Arthurian Wyvern Dragon. Wyvern dragons were Man's protectors, until man tuned on them and hunted them (like the Maquis), to near extinction (because the Wyvern fed on the occasional bovine). The Wyvern Class fighter was developed at MFI Headquarters (Empok Nor) and is a dedicated military ship, with advanced targeting sensors, weapons systems and Borg resistant rotating shield encryption.

The Wyvern is a Medium Range Fighter. It may be based aboard Space Stations for Station & Planetary defense, or assigned to Carriers and large Cruisers for the purpose of either fleet defense, or neutralizing ground and space based targets.

The Wyvern has great versatility due to its fairing mounted, mission specific weapon hardpoints, allowing for missions ranging anywhere from ground assaults using photon bombs, or assault (in squadrons) on a capital ship using mini-torpedoes. An optional Limited Duration Rechargeable Cloaking Device would allow for cloaked launches from mother-ships, adding an additional element of surprise. The Wyvern's sleek design and nacelle based wings give it good atmospheric handling characteristics and landing capabilities without utilizing shields.
