UNIFORMS

'SSD Uniform Guidelines'

One thing SSD members enjoy doing is wearing uniforms that they have made, purchased or assembled for themselves. Whether wearing them to a cell meetings, charity function or a convention, the SSD uniform regulations are established to allow MFI Special Security Division Operatives to have "standards" while still allowing enough room for creative individualization and recognition of success.

There are a number of different uniforms, and many different insignias, awards and accessories you can wear with them. The SSD has several unique things about it, including some of our patches, badges, awards and ribbons; even our rank pips are a unique coloration to help tell us from other branches and areas of MFI. But please remember one thing: it is NOT mandated that uniforms must be worn. These are only suggestions. What we do ask is that you adhere to our guidelines, if you do choose to wear one at all.

Also, please note that MFI and the SSD do not provide you with an actual award ribbon, itself (except in highly unique circumstances); either purchasing one, or making it on your own is the responsibility of the individual member. We can point you to sources for the "example" items we have authorized. And we will even tell you step-by-step instructions on how to fabricate them, but in the end it is your responsibility should you choose to put together a uniform to acquire the proper accoutrements yourself. The Maquis only were in "uniform" once during Star Trek: DS9. Even on Voyager, while they had unique rank insignia, they wore Starfleet uniforms. Therefore, both the "Maquis" uniforms made, and those authorized by FADM (ret.) Gary Davis are approved, as are any and all Starfleet uniforms seen in any of the Star Trek series. In cases where the Army or USMC insignia can not be suitably altered, in order not to offend active duty personnel, any other sci-fi insignia that equals that ribbon or device is authorized. Using established emblems makes obtaining them much easier; changing them is recommended (by making them a different color, et al).

Members who have served, or are currently serving in their respective Nation's Armed Services are authorized to wear either their branch of Service, or Unit/Regimental lapel pin on the right breast pocket-area of their uniform. Note that Trade Qualification pins are not authorized for wear. Trade qualification pins include Pilot Wings, Paratroop wings, marksmanship qualifications, etc.

(Note suggestions on where to buy clothing, hats and other accessories are only suggestions, and are for reference only. If you want to buy from elsewhere please feel free to do so. Cell CO's are free to set the "Uniform of the Day" standards for their cells, should they choose to do so. )

GENERAL UNIFORM GUIDELINES

This is general information for all SSD Uniform suggestions.

RANK INSIGNIA

The Maquis rank pins are authorized for MFI Special Security Division Operatives. Rank insignias are authorized to be worn on the tunic, undershirt or jacket's right collar. OR they may be worn on the SSD cap, centered under the Maquis Forces patch. Pins are to be centered top-to-bottom on the collar and spaced 1 inch back from any leading vertical edge. Maquis rank pins--solid (plain) & maroon background variant are allowed. Rank insignias will be worn on the Operative’s right collar; a Maquis Pin may also be worn on the left collar, if desired.

TRIM

Gold trimming of both Duty and Dress uniform tunic collars & cuffs are authorized for officers holding rank of Ensign to Colonel, while silver trim is authorized for Force Colonel and above. Trimming of collars and cuffs is authorized for any SSD officer or Non-Commissioned Officer who holds a command position within a cell, at zone or executive level.

DEPARTMENT COLORS

On "canon" Trek uniforms, the Departmental color for the SSD is preferred to be Black and/or Grey (Dark), under-tunics are also authorized for SSD per MFI guidelines.
Within the Federation, officers of the SSD wore a chevron shield with a gold embroidered scale of justice over the right breast, in order to remind others of their goal in the Federation. Ranks and the clothing of the position included:

Cadet : Gray Tunics and slacks with a black collar and stripe.
Second Lieutenant : Black tunic and slacks with a goldenrod (yellow) stripe and collar.
First Lieutenant : Black tunic and slacks with a silver stripe and collar.
Captain : Black tunic and slacks with a gold stripe and collar.
Major : Black tunic and slacks with a red stripe and collar.
Lieutenant Colonel : Black tunic and slacks with a maroon stripe and collar.
Colonel : Black tunic and slacks with a turquoise stripe and collar.
General : Black tunic and slacks with a white collar and stripe along with a gold sword insignia fastened to the collar indicating each of the four ranks of general. (A single sword was shown for each rank comparable to the stars worn by officers of General rank in older times).

Within the SSD of the Maquis, there are a few differences from their Starfleet counterparts. They are as follows:

COMMBADGE

Today's Maquis SSD members wear a standard Maquis Forces International combadge over the right breast.

HEADGEAR:

Black baseball style caps (winter or summer weight) are acceptable for wear by SSD Operatives. They can be worn with an Maquis Forces Patch, rank pin, or Maquis symbol.

UNIFORM TYPES:

CLASS A - Formal Dress

The Dress Uniform is always comprised of a Dress Jacket, Dress Trousers, and under-tunic in SSD colors; plus the accessories and accoutrements the wearer is authorized to bear. The Dress jacket, regardless of style is trimmed with 1/16 inch piping around the collar, cuffs, and the closure if desired of whatever trimming the wearer is authorized to have. The Dress trousers should be black, straight legged without flares or cuffs, low-waisted and have side hip pockets. There is a wide range of acceptable materials, but every effort should be to use the same material as used in the Dress Jacket. A one inch wide vertical stripe of goldenrod for Officers, and purple for Non-Com ranks is authorized for the Dress Trousers, if desired, on the outside seam of each trouser leg, running from the top of the waistband to the bottom of the trouser leg. The Dress Trousers may be worn bloused, or de-bloused with Dress Shoes or combat boots. White pistol belt and white gloves for highest formal uniform, otherwise black pistol belt. Both belts to be worn on the outside of jacket. A black web belt or leather belt is authorized for wear with this uniform, with a gold buckle, lined up with the buttons on the shirt and the pants closure. A beret is the headgear for this uniform. White is the standard turtleneck insert color to be worn with regular duty tunic or dress tunic for SSD council members and staff. Black turtleneck for all other Operatives.

Maroon is authorized if black dress is unavailable, and can be worn by all SSD Operatives.
Optionally, should the Operative feel comfortable (or brave) enough to do so, a traditional Scottish kilt ensemble, in the colors of the Black Watch, may be worn in place of the Dress Uniform, accompanied by white knee-socks, plain black shoes, and black sporran.
Should the kilt be chosen for formal dress, a Beret (see MFMC Uniforms for details) is appropriate headgear, in black or maroon, with rank worn at right front rim of beret.

FEMALE VARIANTS (Formal/Mess Dress, Duty uniforms) -

(Note females are not required to use the female variant uniform, if they do not wish to do so.) Any female SSD Operative may replace Dress Trousers with a Dress Skirt, if they so wish. This is a plain black skirt hemmed so that the edge falls within 1 inch above or below the knee, with a one inch vertical stripe (optional) in the color of the Operative's rank as listed for trousers above, running from the waistband to the bottom hem of the skirt. The skirt can be with, or without, side hip pockets. All skirts are to be worn with plain black pumps, highly polished and without bows or decorations; with a heel of no more than 3 inches. Stockings or pantyhose may be flesh-toned, without visible decorations, lace or seams. Female SSD Operatives are authorized to wear a white US Navy Woman's Service Hat, if they so wish. Shoes can be black closed-toe flats.

CLASS B DRESS - A low-cost alternative to the Formal Dress Uniform, this consists of a long sleeved black shirt or blouse, Dress Trousers, the black Four-In-Hand necktie (with long-sleeved shirt, women may chose the "tab" style) and the accessories/accoutrements the wearer is authorized to bear. (The shirt is to be long sleeved as the preferred style, and has two chest pockets which button down, with shoulder epaulettes. This is called often an "aviator" shirt and is easy to find is stores that sell to policemen and security officers.) The shirt is worn tucked in, so that the front row of buttons line up with the belt buckle and the closure of the pants. The Dress Trousers are described above in the Formal Dress Uniform. The Four-in-Hand necktie should be black in color and without adornment or design. If a tie clasp is used to secure it, the clasp must be small, gold in color and plain in style. The "tab" style should also be plain black. A black web belt or leather belt is authorized for wear with this uniform, with a gold buckle, lined up with the buttons on the shirt and the pants closure. Dress shoes or boots are authorized for wear on the feet. A short-sleeved "aviator" styled shirt is also optional.; though no tie is required with the short-sleeved shirt. If worn with tie and gloves, it counts as a formal uniform. Ball caps are the appropriate headgear for this uniform.

CLASS C - Duty Uniforms This is the biggest area of variation. Any and all Starfleet uniforms are hereby approved, as are the "Maquis" uniforms approved by the MFI. Duty Uniforms usually consist of a Duty Jacket, Duty Trousers and the Duty Under-tunic, as well as accessories/accoutrements the wearer is authorized to bear. One common sample is a button down shirt, long sleeve, in the appropriate (goldenrod or purple) rank color. With black pants, sans stripe. Black shoes or boots. And a beret or ball cap, at discretion of the Operative. Subdued or normal web belt. And other add-ons as one is authorized to wear.; this can just be comm-badge, rank, and name tag.

Note 1-Non standard uniforms not listed can be acceptable provided the general guidelines (rank pin suggested location etc.) are upheld in addition to the following: Note 2-That said uniform or outfit can not be seen as a serious attempt to portray any military or law enforcement organization.

SSD Rank Structure

Today, Enlisted SSD Operatives wear black with purple trim, while officers wear black with goldenrod trim. All SSD Operatives are also allowed the option of wearing maroon, rather than black, should they choose.
The SSD Follow the same rank name/designation structure of that of the Maquis Forces Marine Corps.

Traditional MFI Rank Pips are also available for SSD Operatives in maroon, as shown in the following link. (http://wiki.maquis.com/w/Division_Ranks_%28Naval%2C_Marines%2C_and_SSD%29)

Ranks and the clothing of the position previously included the following, some SSD Operatives can still be found wearing these outdated uniforms:
Cadet : Gray Tunics and slacks with a black collar and stripe.
Second Lieutenant : Black tunic and slacks with a goldenrod (yellow) stripe and collar.
First Lieutenant : Black tunic and slacks with a blue stripe and collar.
Captain : Black tunic and slacks with a gold stripe and collar.
Major : Black tunic and slacks with a red stripe and collar.
Lieutenant Colonel : Black tunic and slacks with a white stripe and collar.
Colonel : Black tunic and slacks with a maroon stripe and collar.
General : Black tunic and slacks with a silver collar and stripe along with a gold sword insignia fastened to the collar indicating each of the four ranks of general. (A single sword was shown for each rank comparable to the stars worn by officers of General rank in older times).

In addition to standard Maquis rank pins, the officers and crew of Speical Security Division units could discern rank with color coded uniforms. This enabled officers and crew to differentiate rank at a glance by the color of the tunic and the stripe on the sleeves. Additionally, SSD Badges were (and still are) silver for General Officers and Force Colonel, Gold for Colonel and below.
