Early Life

Robere DesMoulin was born Dec.3 2345 aboard the USS Cardiff en-route to the Setlik III colony along the Cardassian border. Robere was the son of Wolfgang DesMoulin, a farmer and aspiring distiller and Madelaine Chupret, loving mother and accomplished playwright. His older sister, Cecile, was a precocious five year old that had an ear for xenolinguistics at such a young age.

Upon reaching their new home, the DesMoulin family quickly adapted to the hard work of building a new homestead and nurturing the lush farmland available. Wolfgang swiftly got to work planting his first crops, rolling fields full of wheat and rye, along with an indigenous grain, in the hopes to make the perfect whiskey, in addition to working with other settlers to build the community houses. Madelaine, on the other hand, had the pleasure of pulling double duty with caring for a newborn son and a rambunctious daughter while running a household in an old cargo bay from one of the original colony ships since their house was not build yet. Unfortunately for Madelaine, the new life on Setlik III did not provide an opportunity for her to continue her writing.

In 2347, The Setlik III colony was heinously attacked by the Cardassians. The Cardassians commenced with orbital bombardment on the colony and surrounding areas for an hour before beaming down hundreds of shock troops to mop up. In standard chivalrous fashion, the men took up arms, but not before shepherding the women and children to safety in the now overgrown husks of the original colony ships, hoping the Cardassians would leave them alone or the overgrowth would mask any visual sign of recent activity.

The colonists were able to get a distress call sent out, though the nearest help available was hours away. They had to stand their ground.. The colonists put up an admirable fight, although their efforts were paltry at best. They were no match for professional soldiers bent on eradicating the colony. Their defense turned into a massacre as it would eventually be known. The USS Rutledge arrived too late to prevent the horror and bloodshed, but deployed landing parties that were instrumental in saving the lives of the remaining colonists.

Robere, his mother Madelaine, and sister Cecile were rescued by an unknown crew-member and evacuated to the orbiting Rutledge. After the loss of their husband and father, the broken DesMoulin family returned home to Earth to live with Madelaine's family on their farm near the Loire Valley in Centre, France.

Life On Earth

With the help of her family in raising Cecile and Robere, Madelaine resumed her passion for play-writting, garnering praise and acknowledgment for her latest tragedy about the Setlik III massacre. Cecile continued to explore her talented ear and in 2358 she entered Starfleet Academy, specializing in Communications and Xenolinguistics. Robere meanwhile showed signs of being a free spirit, and as such was unable to properly apply himself in a structured school environment. Robere's maternal grandfather decided to use his retirement to fill his free time by taking on Robere as a dedicated mentor and student, teaching an alternative curriculum, following whatever Robere was interested in at the time. As time went on, the bond of grandfather to grandson evolved to father and son and best friends. Robere was encouraged to study as much as he could and test out of as many subjects as possible. This is the time when Robere's family would explain the tragedies of the Setlik III massacre along with the ongoing aggressions between the Cardassians and the Federation. As time went on, Robere began to gain an interest in joining Starfleet when Cecile was preparing for her entrance exams. With an interest in going to the Academy, Robere got a renewed interest in his studies. At the age of 18, Robere shipped out to start his first year at the Starfleet Marine Corps Academy in 2363.

Life at the SFMCA

The culture shock of going from an alternative curriculum to a structured military environment and education was intense for Robere, but he quickly adapted and flourished. He thrived from the intense training and challenged himself, the faculty, and administration by picking up a double-major of Infantry and Special Operations, doubling up on course load while taking night and weekend classes, in addition to using summer breaks for independent study and testing out of classes. Robere was one of only a handful of cadets that have ever completed the academy in three years instead of the customary four. On June 2, 2366, immediately after graduation being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, Robere reported for Special Operations training at John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School in Fort Bragg North Carolina on the personal recommendation from the Marine Corps Academy Commandant. The JFKSWCAS had a long history of training Special Operations members from the SFMC all the way back to the 20th century when it was formed to train the old United States Army Special Forces. In recognition of the rich history of the school, they still perform a rigorous training program, culminating in the Robin Sage field excersizes. The training Robere received was grueling but not daunting. Robere managed to absorb the knowledge as best as he could, and managed to graduate as one of the top members of his training group on April 30, 2367 along with being promoted to First Lieutenant. Robere then used his sizable amount of accrued leave to spend time with his ailing grandfather.

SFMC Career

At the conclusion of Robere's leave, he was assigned to the 1287th Marine Strike Group attached to USS Berlin NCC-14232 patroling the Romulan Neutral Zone. Upon a recommendation by Master Sergeant Rados Perkovic, Robere's Senior Drill Instructor at Special Operations school, Robere was selected as Unit DOIC under Marine Captain Robles. Robere then spent the next three and a half years training with his unit under the expert tutelage of Cpt. Robles, with scattered special operations missions in between. In 2370, news spread throughout the Federation that hostilities with the Cardassians have ended with the signing of a peace treaty. This treaty formed a demilitarized zone between Federation and Cardassian space, in addition to drawing new borderlines, causing Federation colonies to be within Cardassian teritory and vice versa. This was the beginning to the eventual creation of the Maquis, a group of terrorists bent on eradicating Cardassian rule on the disputed territories. Robere was happy the hostilities were over, but his concern grew for the colonists who decided to stay in the homes they built and be ruled by the Cardassian government. His hopes that the Cardassians would assist the Federation colonists were soon dashed as word of Cardassian oppression began to reach Starfleet personnel who had family in those sectors. Stories of oppressive laws and unnecessary embargos tore at Robere's heart. He was relieved when orders began coming in from above to begin covert relief missions to the colonists as Starfleet and the Federation were bound by the treaty to not intercede in Cardassian affairs.

In 2371, the 1287th MSG was performing one such covert mission to supply and administer food and medicine to combat a rapid outbreak of Thelusian flu. While they were attending to the sick, a Cardassian patrol came through the village they were working in. The Cardassians were interrogating anyone that could stand and speak at the time. While patrolling the sick, one Cardassian noticed they were all using fresh Starfleet issued blankets to keep warm. Commotion began as the Cardassian patrol began confiscating the blankets as evidence of Starfleet interference in Cardassian territory. When the colonists began to fight back, the Cardassians opened fire on anyone displaying any threatening posture. The 1287th MSG began opening fire on the Cardassians. In the midst of the phazer fire, three colonists were killed by the Cardassians while Cpt. Robles was fataly injured. Robere rushed the lead Cardassian, killing him with phazer fire as he came up behind him, turning himself while using the Cardassians corpse as a shield, firing at the pinned down Cardassian patrol. Robere directed the members of the strike group to break up and flank the patrol while he provided covering fire with his phazer and the dead Cardassians disruptor. The strike group deftly surrounded the patrol as the Cardassians fired on them, saving Robere from any more phazer fire. Seeing his men being fired upon, Robere again rushed the bogged down Cardassians, flinging a photon grenade into their embankment. The grenade exploded, killing the rest of the Cardassians. The strike group was quickly retrieved by the Berlin, but was too late to save Cpt. Robles who died at the scene from his wounds. The official reports listed Cpt. Robles as killed during a training excersise, and the strike group was ordered to secrecy for if word got out the Federation was providing covert assistance across the demilitarized zone, the peace treaty would cease to exist and war would break out again.

Shortly thereafter, Robere was promoted to Marine Captain and instilled as OIC of the 1287th. Awarded the Starfleet Decoration for Gallantry in recognition of performance above and beyond the call of duty, Robere, believing in the emptiness of the award, begins to question the effectiveness of covert relief operations in favor of more direct actions. The seeds of discontent were planted with the signing of the peace treaty. They were reaped with the death of his friend and mentor Alex Robles.

Maquis Career

Shortly after his promotion to Marine Captain, Robere handed off command of the 1287th MSG to his Deputy and resigned from the Starfleet Marine Corps. He settled on the colony where his dear friend Alex was murdered by Cardassians, where he was treated with a heroes welcome. He slowly cultivated the resentment for the Cardassian government his newfound friends had, while training them in all of his knowledge of special operations and guerilla warfare. Word spread through the colonies about resistance to the Cardassian oppressors, who have begun to arm themselves. As the colonists kept fighting the Cardassian weapons buildup, Robere and a band of his trusted friends joined a new resistance movement, called the Maquis, in hopes to organize their defensive and put up a strong offensive. As time went on, more and more Starfleet officers put themselves in place to provide intelligence or materiel to the Maquis as they left Starfleet and pursued the Maquis mission. For Robere, the next two years were a blur of defending and attacking. Advance and retreat. The Maquis was slowly being beaten back by the weight of the Cardassian resolve and the lack of support from the Federation. As time went on, more friends died, and the Maquis got smaller and smaller.

Robere proved his mettle in battle a hundred times over, earning him the chance to provide the Maquis leaders more valuable tactical input. Slowly Robere became more influential, while also losing his own resolve. It is one thing to defend your home from an aggressor, but it is another thing to have so much violence in your life while the Federation simply looks the other way. Perhaps, sometimes it is better to escape with your life then watch as hundreds and thousands of your fellow colonists perish under the heal of an oppressive government. The will to fight was leaving Robere's blood. He wanted to pack it all up, head home to grandpa's farm and take over the family business that was started so many years ago...

Then, in 2373, the Dominion came, and the terrible thought of the Cardassians joining them. Robere could tell the end was near as Gul Dukat gave his famous speech outlining the destruction of the Maquis. Robere even tried to get others to see where their survival would reside. Would it be better to run and fight another day, or fight an overwhelming force with no hope of survival? Robere retreated to Athos IV to persuade the rest of the Maquis to retreat, hide out, anything to be able to survive and fight later. The Federation would never forget what the Maquis stood for, and as time would go on, others would take up the cause as well. Anywhere there is oppression there is also hope, and the Maquis will give that hope. Before he had a chance to convince them, Athos IV was attacked by the Jem'Hadar. It was a slaughter. Robere got back to his personal transport and left as the Jem'Hadar attacked and the Federation evacuated. Robere didn't want to be jailed for his participation in the Maquis.

He piloted his transport back to Earth where he went back home to his mother. Madelaine was so excited to see her son after so many years. Robere's grandfather was terminally ill and would pass on very shortly. Robere took as much time as he could get with his grandfather, talking about his career, the Maquis, and his place in life. His grandfather knew what was happening with the Dominion and feared for his family. He explained to Robere that no one can farm land that doesn't exist. If he wants to take over the family business, Robere will have to ensure that there is still a farm left after the Dominion are taken care of. His grandfather explained that once he dies, Robere will be the man of the family and it is his duty to protect it. With his last words, Robere's grandfather told him to do what he hates, so that he can live to do what he loves. After Robere laid his grandfather to rest, he packed a bag, said goodbye to his mother, and began traveling the stars, disguised as a merchant, in the hopes of finding an ally. In the hopes of finding...somewhere to belong.
