Pharmacology of the Star Trek Universe
The following pages contain most of the information needed to complete the
Maquis Academy College of Medicine
Pharmacology examination. It is broken into several sections:
Drug Sources, Drug Naming, Drug References, and the Drug Listings.

Drug Sources
All of the drugs on the market today come from One of Four sources: Plants, Animal, Mineral, or Synthetic.
An example of Plant based drugs is atropine, morphine and digitalis. Morphine is an Opium dirivitive manufactured by the processing of Poppy plants.
An example of Animal based drugs is Insulin and glucagon. Terran animals (of ALL kinds) produce Insulin to metabolize sugars in order to produce energy.
Examples of Mineral based drugs are Calcium Chloride, Sodium Bicarbonate and Potasium Chloride. The body needs minerals to build strong bones, to help the heart contract properly and keep the body working at a proper Acid / Base balance.
Examples of a Synthetic drug is Lidocaine and procainamide. Lidocaine is a man made drug used to block pain impulses in localized areas of the body.
Drug Naming
1. Chemical name : Identifies the structure of the drug Example--ethyl-1-methyl-4-phenylisonipectotate hydrochloride
2. Generic name : Usually an abbreviated version of the chemical name Example--meperidine hydrochloride
3. Trade name : Given to the drug by each manufacturer Example--Demerol Hydrochloride¨
4. Official name : Listing in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Example--meperidine hydrochloride, U.S.P.
Drug References
1. AMA Drug Evaluations 1-a. Manual published by American Medical Association 1-b. Covers dosages, side effects, indications, contraindications
2. Physicians' Drug Reference (PDR) 2-a. Published yearly by Medical Economics Data Production Company 2-b. Contains Product Identification Guide with photos and information on most drugs on market 2-c. Should be aboard every paramedic unit (and shuttle craft).
3. Drug inserts found in each drug package 3-a. Prepared by drug manufacturer 3-b. Can be collected by medics into notebooks for personal use.
4. Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual 4-a. Published by Starfleet Surgeon General's Office (Ballentine Books) 4-b. Covers Medical Time line, Chart of TOS Diseases and Drugs, etc. 4-c. Should be aboard every Starship in the fleet.
