Attack squadrons (designated VMA) do light bombing missions in addition to air superiority
VMFA are dual role squadrons that fly aircraft like the F/A-301 Gryphon
VMA squadrons typically fly aircraft like the A-63J Valkyrie
VMF squadrons typically fly aircraft like the F-96E Peregrine
VGMA squadrons typically fly aircraft like the V-101F Veritech
If you drop the M from the designator, it becomes a naval rather than marine squadron

V=fixed wing
D=Special Security Division craft. (Ex. VDA 311)
K=Klingon craft. (Ex. VKA 200)
M=Marine craft. (Ex. VMA 114)
R=Romulan craft. (Ex. VRA 81)
S=Special Operations Command craft. (Ex. VSA 111)

A=Attack
F= Fighter
G= Variable Geometry i.e. Veritech Squadrons (Ex. GMA would be a Marine Veritech Attack Sqdrn)
X= Experimental; a Sqdrn using or testing experimental craft (Ex. VXMA would be an Experimental Marine Attack Sqdrn)
AW= Aerospace Early Warning, this could be (Ex. VAW-904)
AQ= Electronic Warfare craft. (Ex. VAQ-814)
S= Special Operations Command
B= Bombing squadron.(Ex. VMB-101)
C= Close Air Support (Ex. VCA-114)
