You may have received an email concerning the story of Unsung, Quiet Heroes. The latest version includes Lee Marvin, Bob Keeshan, and Fred Rodgers purporting their military connections and bravery. We want to believe that these unsuspected men are heroes because deep down inside we all want to believe we can be heroes.

Point of Correction: The Marvin, Keeshan, Rodgers story is mostly false and twisted. I have no doubt that all three of these were great men, but the story is not true except for bits. Check out the truth on Snopes. [1]

Recently, Changling Yazdir (G Yazdir) said on the mail list, "I think Police Officers, Fire-Fighters and EMS fall into this category of Unknown/Un-sung heros (as well as any former military conflict veteran). When you see one, give 'em a thumbs up!!"

Indeed! We all should be thankful for the quiet real world every day heroes who live and sometimes die for our safety, security, and rights to live the lives we enjoy every day. Military vets don't have to serve in war time to place their lives on the line. Just training and engaging in their "routine" operations or undeclaired war ops can easily result in death and serious injury in the blink of an eye. Anyone who has ever worked a flight deck can attest to that.

Even great minds that evoke our imagination can be heroes. That is one of the underlying reasons most Trek fans love Trek so much. Rodenberry's dream has been fed and nurtured through the years to envision many things heroic and continues to serve as a source of inspiration for generations to come. That is why I am a fan. I suspect that is part of why you are a fan too.

When you see a service member, a law enforcement officer, a firefighter, a paramedic, a doctor, a nurse, a minister, a teacher, a volunteer, an athlete, a mentor, or [the list goes on...] REMEMBER that you probably are seeing an Unsung Hero. Be thankful and don't take them for granted.
