GAME MANAGERS NOTE

The following is a short fiction of the attack on the Barkon IV communications/surveillance platform dubbed "Marathon Base".

Written by General Larry French.

The Battle for Marathon Base

“General, secure message coming in for you from Maquis SEALS Command.” the comm. chief said.

“On screen” K’moghjIH replied.

“General, the ICV Heghnach is to proceed at full cloak and warp speed to M.S.S. Storm Bay. Here are your encoded mission specs to review on your way.” The SEALS Commander said.

“Transmission received, General.” The comm. chief spoke.

“Admiral, my team and my ship usually work alone!” K’moghjIH growled at the Admiral.

“Not this time, General. Follow these orders to the letter or you are off the mission. Is that clear?” retorted the Admiral.

“Yes, Sir, End transmission.” grumbled the large Klingon in the ICV Heghnach’s command chair. “You heard the Admiral, proceed at maximum warp to M.S.S. Storm Bay” K’moghjIH exclaimed as he got up, snatched a hard copy of the encoded transmission from the comm. chief and exited the bridge.

“Ksimka, get down here!” he yells from his quarters.

A few moments later, Ksimka enters and says, “Yes, milord.” They review the mission orders together and discuss strategy.

Once at M.S.S. Storm Bay SEALS Team VI begins running through simulations of the mission.

“SEALS Team Six, meet me in the holodeck training area in 10 minutes!” K’moghjIH barked.

K’moghjIH enters the holodeck and says, “Computer, run mission orders,”

“Accessing…” the computer says as it begins to display the orders.

“Let’s get to work.” the general said as they began running the simulation.

After four days of grueling practice the mission is firmly embedded in their minds.

“Alright, now that we’ve got it, go catch a few hours rack time!”.

Hours later, the pilot announces that the ship is in orbit of Barkon IV.

The PAVE Intruder descends to 15 kilometers and the Team HALO’s out of the craft. At first there is only silence and extreme cold, and then slowly as they get into the atmosphere the wind begins to howl as they plummet at terminal velocity through the night sky. At 3 kilometers, the chutes open and jerk the lethargy away; the howling wind is replaced by the sounds of air rippling through their chutes. Slowly they descend onto the platform, no alarms are raised, and all appears quiet. Silently, methodically Team VI begins taking out the bad guys. The only sounds are the gentle night time breeze and the muffled bursts of submachine gun fire. With one Computer analyst behind each SEALS Team member, they make their way to their designated location, silently killing the unsuspecting mercenaries. The Team fans out Section Three heads to their designated areas to plant the explosives in case the platform cannot be taken or, must be quickly abandoned. The Team over-watch snipers are in position on the antenna and the roof of the crew building and have good vantage points over the platform.

K’moghjIH looked at the G5-N, the small sub machine gun feeling like a Childs toy in his hands. Command had chosen these compact weapons for stealth. In many cases installations had sensors to detect the firing of a phaser weapon, thereby setting off alarms. These weapons, chambered in a caseless .40 caliber rapidly expanding projectile would knock down even the toughest of opponents. Still K’moghjIH felt it was a toy.

The Teams Second Officer, leading the way around a corner surprises two mercenaries. There is the sound of ripping canvas, as the weapon fires, the small projectiles rip through the pair of Cardassian mercenaries. Blood quickly pools at his feet as he waits for others to come, heart pounding in his chest. Then slowly he rounds the corner and continues on his path of destruction.

Section One: makes their way to the central communications center, the place where the computer analysts need to be. No small number of enemy troops has been killed on their way there. Quickly the analysts get to work; the SEALS quickly fan out and begin searching the offices and quarters for any information that might be used.

“Let’s get a move on people; I don’t want to spend anymore time down here than absolutely necessary.” The General whispered. Just then two more enemy troops came in and were quickly taken out by the SEALS.

Nearly ten minutes pass before anyone speaks.
The lead computer analyst brakes the silence, “OK, we’re in, now to start feeding the viruses into their systems, and start downloading everything” as he smiled at the large Klingon.

K’moghjIH whispered into his comm. “Gadget to all team members, double check your zones for bad guys. We don’t need any surprises” Just as the SEALS began to move out, more mercenary forces began pouring out of the woodwork and opened fire.

At that second, two team members were hit with phaser fire and killed. Two SEALS picked them up and scurried behind cover, returning fire as they moved.

“Explosive team reports that charges are in place, but we lost two Team members Sir ” the comm. specialist said.

K’moghjIH Roars in anger at the loss of his men and empties the magazine of his sub machine gun into a group of mercenaries killing all of them. “Kill these P’tachs!” he roars into his comm. as he reloads the small weapon. “Impressive for a toy” K’moghjIH thought aloud and fired another burst.

For almost five minutes the firefight raged across the platform with SEALS Team members pouring fire into mercenary soldiers. One SEALS member brandishing a blackened bat’leth, slashed through several of the mercenaries.

When the proverbial smoke cleared only the Operators of Team VI remained. Quickly the SEALS gathered the bodies of the enemy. Once searched, the bodies were placed in the freezers of the platforms galley.

A few hours later more PAVE Intruders arrived carrying Marines, more computer operators and numerous crates of equipment.

A young Marine Captain approaches K’moghjIH and salutes. “Sir, I’m Captain Ryan my men and I are here to relieve you as security of the installation Sir”. K’moghjIH returns the salute and growls disdainfully at the young Marine.

“Gadget to all team members, rally at the extraction point” K’moghjIH spoke into his comm. In a few moments his Team was formed in front of him.

The bodies of five SEALS were silently loaded onto the PAVE Intruder. K’moghjIH and his remaining Warriors raised their heads to the night sky of Barkon IV and loosed a Death Howl, warning those in Sto-vo-kor that five Klingon Warriors were coming.
