Tensions Rise between the Maquis and the Federation
The Haven incident seems to be a thorn in the side of the Federation diplomatic corps. The joint Maquis Starfleet investigation has determined that the ship used in the attack was indeed a Maquis vessel. The Maquis have announced that the raid on haven was indeed a rogue Maquis unit that still holds some anger to the Federation, for its failures during the Cardassian treaty, the problem now seems that the personnel involved in that raid have gone into hiding and the Maquis and Starfleet have begun a manhunt to bring the culprits to justice.
The Maquis have also refused the Federations demand that those responsible for the raid be turned over to Starfleet. The Maquis council stated that the fugitives are Maquis citizens and have the right to be tried in a Maquis Court and not a Federation one. This action by the Maquis has upset both Starfleet, the Federation council and many of the families who lost loved ones in the raid. The Federation Ambassador to the Maquis explained to this reporter that this action could have severe consequences for the Maquis and will urge them to reconsider this position. However, the Maquis Ambassador to the Federation stated that there is concern that the Federation could not provide an impartial tribunal and that the outcome would be biased. When the reporter asked how the Maquis can ensure an unbiased trial since some of the Maquis people still hold disdain for the Federation, she stated that many in the Maquis are very upset that this raid was carried out by one of our own. This act is not what the government or the people of the Maquis stand for and we will make sure that justice is brought to the families to those who have lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy.
But sources in Starfleet have told this reporter that the Maquis do not want to hand over the culprits because the raid on Haven was in fact endorsed by the Maquis government and now they are scrambling to cover up this incident to avoid any unpleasantness with the Federation. Some in Starfleet have stated that if the Maquis find who are responsible for this terrorist act and do not hand them over than we should go in and take them using the barrel of a phaser. It has also become apparent that Starfleet has increased the number of patrols on both the Cardassian Maquis border and the Maquis federation border. In response to the increased Starfleet presence along the Maquis borders, the Maquis have issued a statement that all Starfleet vessels for military and aid operations will not be permitted in Maquis territory with out Maquis fleet escorts. This action has caused some upset to various aid organizations who state this action will further the suffering of the Cardassian people do to the prolonged arrival of vital supplies. This has caused some formal protests outside Maquis establishments some are calling on the Federation to charge the Maquis with crimes against sentient beings.
