A term most often associated with a ship, sim, or group, which signifies a head leadership role.
In Character, the commanding officer of a ship is the highest-ranking officer aboard the vessel, having authority over and responsibility for the ship, the crew, and the mission, and usually playing a key role in shaping the storyline of the game.
Out of Character, the Commanding Officer is usually synonymous with Host and/or Game Master. Groups which feature in-character group management tend to prefer the term "Commanding Officer" for the game manager, while groups featuring out-of-character group management tend to prefer the term "Host," reserving the term "Commanding Officer" for the character filling that role in the game. In both cases, this individual is in charge of the group and usually responsible for game master duties.
