Exactly what I was speaking about.... --COMO 10-of-9 [s.lackey] 20:42, 6 December 2005 (PST)

Re: Steve's comments on the article side. I think this is a good idea, except for the Community Service bit. I realize it was just an idea he threw out. I'm against it because I believe that Community Service should be something someone does because they want to not because they have to. This is also why I am against schools and colleges doing it. I have no problem with rewarding Community Service (the ribbon, points towards advancement, etc), but it shouldn't be required. It just makes it a chore to be done to achieve your goal, instead of the goal itself. --RAdm Logan Andrews 17:39, 8 December 2005 (PST)

I see your point...

Good point Logan. You are correct in that I kind of threw an idea out there to show what we COULD do.

IF we were to go in this direction, maybe we could establish a system of "Quality" points. "X" number of points total needed to be ready for advancement. Those points could come from community service hours OR convention/recruiting service OR article submissions OR upper leadership OR a combination of any/all of these.

As for requiring community service, I can speak from RL experience as a Scout leader. We require boys to do service in order to teach them the value of giving back to others and serving the extended community at all levels. We are trying to teach a "value", NOT looking for slave labor. At first a lot of the boys don't get the point, but as they progress they slowly come to learn the value of service. It is all part of learning to be a good leader...

Although we are not teaching youth [for the most part], we are trying to develop [or sort out] the good leaders we need for MFI.

The point system I proposed would allow those who can not or will not do service to find other ways to qualify. Of course my guess is that with many of our people, they are already doing service anyway. [GRIN]
