Departments Within the SSD

Aside from the normal Investigations Operations Teams that make up the bulk of the Special Securities Division, there are other more specialized units that comprise a tighter focus to ensure the safety of the Maquis citizenry. Investigations comprises separate units that work to follow up on major incidents and prepare cases for presentation in court; their goal, to bring to justice all those who, by their deeds, would attempt to bring harm to our community. Investigators works closely with the victims of crime and with local, county and federal prosecutors.

The Special Security Explosive Ordnance Department is trained to identify suspicious devices, determine if these devices are an explosive danger, and render these suspicious devices safe. Training for the EOD takes the operatives 200 hours to complete. Specialists instruct operatives in device recognition, explosive demolition, equipment familiarization and use through classroom instruction and practical exercises. EOD is a participant in the Maquis Inter-Agency Bomb Disposal Teams. Each team is made up of two SSD Officers, two SOC Operatives, and two MFMC Soldiers. The inter-agency bomb teams respond to threats throughout the area of the Badlands. Additional duties of each team include assisting in investigations involving explosives, providing explosive device recognition classes throughout the Fleet, and giving assistance to other protective and security agencies.

Emergency Response -

This department provides a full range of emergency-service capabilities including responses to fires, medical calls, hazardous materials incidents and rescue responses. The Emergency Response Department provides advance level training including a variety of opportunities, ranging from Fire Suppression, Hazardous Materials and Technical Rescue teams.

Companion Animal Units -

The Mission of the Companion Animal Units are to provide the best possible animal support to the SSD and the communities the Department serves. Specifically, it is the mission of the unit to be successful in locating and apprehending those involved in criminal activity, to aid in the location of evidence at crime scenes, and provide physical and psychological protection to line operatives when necessary and practical. The Special Securities Division has a number of active Companion Animal teams, some active with ordinance and contraband detection teams.

Hazardous Operations Unit -

The HOU is committed to a comprehensive plan of education, law enforcement and underwater investigations, involving all aquatic, maritime, orbital and space activities. The HOU considers educating the public about hazardous element safety as its highest priority, but there are times when the Unit will take enforcement action. This will typically happen with repeat offenders that have not complied after a warning. These units has many operatives that conduct special investigations, in which they search for and collect evidence of crimes in hazardous environments.

Tactical Command Operations -

Tactical Command Operations is manned by a number of highly trained units that can mobilize quickly and have specialty training in a variety of skills, which include the following:

•Crisis resolution •High risk arrest or search warrant service •Special surveillance •Dignitary protection •Any unusual occurrence requiring extra police response

Tactical Command Operations is composed of a number of forces large enough to accomplish their mission, yet small enough to achieve effective infiltration. Each Tactical Unit is provided with weapons designed to deliver disciplined, balanced firepower to neutralize opposing fire or for defense if under attack. Each Tactical Unit is capable of responding to emergency situations with the equipment necessary to resolve the situation; that resolution will be achieved through negotiation or with the minimum amount of force necessary to preserve life and property.
